Submariner Studies
CWR5513-003
CWR5513-034
CWR5513-003 and CWR5513-034 were crafted from Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513s, respectively circa 1965 and 1989.
These two Rolex Submariners were provided to Cloister for reimagination independently, years apart, by two siblings. For the first, we began by mixing a color for the dial matched to the stainless steel case. The luminous indices were replaced with four large, geometric indices painted in black. We hand-sanded the original aluminum bezel, and fitted the watch with a later Oyster Link Submariner bracelet (circa 1990) with flip-lock clasp, and hand-engraved the Cloister Mark onto the watch’s caseback.
For Cloister’s second Submariner project—a birth-year Ref. 5513 a client had purchased for reimagination to celebrate his thirtieth birthday—we coated the watch’s case and bracelet in a black satin “Diamond-like Carbon” finish. The dial layout references Cloister’s earlier Submariner, and incorporates a “30” motif throughout the design: the 6 o’clock marker was rendered in a contrasting red, the “30” on the painted bezel was retained while the majority of the bezel paint was removed, and the number “30” was engraved on the watch’s caseback beneath the “DLC” finish. The watch was delivered on its original oyster bracelet, with an accompanying Parisian grey suede strap (not pictured).
